One of the saddest realities in the world is that there are more pets than there are homes for them.  The concept of spay/neuter is not new, it is just not important to enough people. surely cost should not be an obstacle because there are so many low-cost and no-cost programs available all over our country. just Google “low cost spay neuter” and you will see what I mean.  I Googled “low cost spay neuter Los Angeles county” and on the first page there were 10 matches.  Some are based on income and are 100% free; some cities provide certificates to income qualified pet owners.  In California City in Kern county CA, it is free to dog owners that are residents of the city.  Some veterinarians actually offer prices that are better than the low cost programs; you just need to let your fingers do the dialing.

In March of this year, the Heigl foundation teamed up with Cal City Pet clinic to offer free spay and neuter services to dog owners that are residents of California City, (Kern County) CA  and book the appointment through the Heigl foundation at 323-798-4101.

The Spay Neuter project of Los Angeles offers three Los Angeles area clinic locations that provide low cost spay neuter and vaccine services for dogs and cats. There is a hotline number on their site to call to set appointments, and informative videos on the topic. They have discounted prices for families who qualify based on low income, so call them to find out what you need to bring with you to qualify. They also accept coupons and vouchers that are available through the City of Los Angeles.

AngelDogs foundation operates a big truck that is their mobile spay and neuter clinic. They go to different locations in Kern and Los Angeles Counties. There is a calendar on their website with their schedule and their telephone number for setting appointments.  some of the cities in Los Angeles county also offer coupons and vouchers, and Angeldogs will tell you how to get them. here is a picture of their truck:

Angeldogs offers, in addition to low cost spay and neuter, microchipping and vaccinations I got to spend a few minutes visiting with the Angeldog’s team when they were in Pomdale last Sunday:

Whether you have a purebred or a mixed breed pet, there are just not enough homes for all the puppies and kittens that are born each year. I know that because of my volunteer work with southern California Pomeranian Rescue, people are always surprised to learn that even purebred Pomeranians can end up in the animal shelter. It is wrong to allow a pet to produce unwanted offspring that eventually end up in shelters, and sadly, are euthanized because of pet overpopulation.  Please don’t contribute to the problem by letting your pet have even one litter.

I have talked about three sources of low cost spay and neuter that are local to me;  the same kinds of sources are available in virtually every city across the United States, and the Internet makes finding them very easy if you know how to Google! They may have different names, but start by Googling “low cost spay neuter” and the Internet will do the rest to find matches that are close to you.
